Steps on how to make your designs into an actual product
Starting a clothing brand requires more than just designing a few awesome t-shirts or hoodies. You need to make sure you know the basic steps. This article teaches you how to start your clothing brand in order. If you want to create a clothing brand from scratch, there are many areas to attend to. We will cover everything you need to consider and, more importantly, provide you with some valuable resources and advice.
From Sketch to Reality
There are many steps to this process, but we're going to highlight the most important ones:
Step 1: Mood Board / Ideation / Inspiration
A mood board is a collage of images that reflect the style, theme, and color palette you have chosen for your clothing design. Mood boards give you an insight into the overall look and feel of a collection, and they help you to think about how all the pieces fit together and inspire you to create your designs.

Step 2: Fashion Illustration / Sketches
Once you have decided on a concept for your clothing line, it's time to create some sketches. Fashion illustrations, also known as sketchbooks or storyboards, are key in helping you visualize your ideas before they are translated into actual garments. Your sketches must be detailed enough to be used as templates for pattern-cutting later in the process – if they aren't detailed enough, it can lead to costly mistakes further down the line!
Step 3: Technical Sketches
Once you have developed a range of sketches that represent your vision for your clothing line, it's time to convert them into technical drawings to be used as templates when creating patterns from scratch (if needed). This process involves drawing out each piece.
Wait, what is a Tech Pack?
A tech pack is a document that contains all of the necessary information to make a garment. This includes how to produce your designs. A tech pack is an essential tool for communicating with manufacturers so they can successfully make your clothing line.
Step 5: Sourcing
Once you have decided on your design and have completed a tech pack, it's time to source fabrics and materials. You should be able to find quality suppliers who can deliver what you need at an affordable price point.
Step 6: Sampling
Sampling is the process of creating your garment in a sample size to see how it will look on an actual person before ordering mass quantities of fabric and making the garment again. Sampling is also an opportunity to test different fabrics or make adjustments to fit based on how your body looks in each sample size.
Step 7: Fit And Review
Once you have samples made up, try them on yourself and review them in different lighting and with various shoes/accessories, etc. Make sure they look good on various body types and fit well in all areas. If they don't look right, take notes so that you can revise the design before going into production.
Step 8: Approval
Once your garments have been fit-tested, reviewed, and modified if necessary, it's time for approval by your client or yourself.
Step 9: Production
Once you have completed your design, it's time to start working on making it into a wearable garment. Depending on how many people you need to make your garments, this phase can take a few weeks to months.
Are you ready to start your dream brand?
Remember that simplicity is key if you're trying to learn how to design a clothing brand. The most effective branding is often done with very few colors and subtle designs because there's already so much variety among clothing brands. Setting yourself apart from the competition takes careful thought and consideration.
